Hello there :)
Having recently been diagnosed with the chronic pain condition Fibromyalgia I am determined to live life to its fullest, even on bad pain days, and believe me some days, during a flare, the pain can be severe! I’m not as active as I used to be nor do I socialise like I used to – life has changed! I’m a full time secondary school teacher but I needed to find new hobbies to keep me busy and take my mind off the pain.
But what hobbies?
Well, I have decided to teach myself how to bake! I’ve not attempted it since the exploding buns incident of my childhood (my father still talks about it today, he had to scrape them off the oven!) Until this week I have shuddered at the thought of baking again but I’m now the proud owner of 2 recipe books, a wooden spoon, baking tins, a food mixer and measuring spoons! In the past week I’ve been discovering the mysterious world of different varieties of flour and sugar, and learning the baking lingo: creaming, folding, beating, baking blind. Armed with my shopping list of essential tools of the baker’s trade I entered the baking aisle – flour, sugar (yes, all the varieties!), baking powder etc. So much choice and expensive!
So, I was ready for my first cake – banana and walnut! I followed the recipe and waited with bated breath for the finished cake – I felt a little excited mixing the ingredients (like a proper grown up! – I’m 41). The hardest part was waiting for it to cool down! And………..it was a success – moist and delicious but a little ugly!
I’m feeling inspired now…….which cake is next? What other hobbies will I try? I’m sure that there will be small successes and disasters along the way. I intend to blog about them all!
Keep smiling :)
Claire
