Living with Fibromyalgia is tough – it’s a painful condition that sometimes steals my positivity. So, I have made it my mission to seek out and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Happiness does not have to be complex. Sipping my morning coffee, enjoying the peace and quiet before the crazy day begins can be one of the best pleasures ever.
“How many undervalue the power of simplicity! But it is the real key to the heart.”
William Wordsworth
Look with fresh eyes at everything around you. Enjoy the beauty of the sunrise, the laugh of a child or a cup of coffee with a friend. For me, happiness can be found on a cold Sunday afternoon, wrapped up in my slanket, snuggling with my cats, a movie on the TV, and a warm mug of hot chocolate in my hand. Heaven. It gives me a warm, calming feeling even as I write this.
“Find ecstasy in life; the mere sense of living is joy enough.”
Emily Dickinson
Today, I want to share my simple pleasures with you and hopefully this will inspire you to reflect on the little things that bring pleasure to you as well.
- A good novel – I read every day.
- The smell of home baked fresh bread.
- Popcorn and a good movie.
- Listening to good music – I have an eclectic taste in music, everything from Queen to Eminem.
- The smell of fresh-cut grass.
- Watching the sunrise or sunset
- Hot chocolate with mini marshmallows.
- Popping bubble wrap.
- Receiving an unexpected compliment.
- Bacon.
- The scent of my favourite candle (Yankee candle – Sweet Strawberry) permeating the house.
- A delicious dessert.
- Laying back and watching the stars.
- Walking barefoot on the beach.
- The scent of fresh laundry.
- Taking a long, relaxing shower.
- Making someone smile.
- A smoothie first thing in the morning.
- Fresh clean bed sheets.
- Sleeping in on a rainy day.
- Checking something off my to-do list.
- Coffee – preferably Nespresso.
- Chocolate mmmmm.
- Strawberries from my garden.
- Fresh snow.
- A refreshing nap.
- Snuggling on the sofa with my cats.
- Laughing with friends.
- A long conversation with a good friend.
- An uncluttered room.
- A cooling breeze on a hot day.
- An empty email inbox.
Ah, the simple pleasures; the gifts of life that we each subconsciously celebrate. They can bring serenity and tranquillity to the mind and a smile to our faces.
This week, I challenge you to list some simple pleasures that bring you joy. Whenever life and the pain of fibromyalgia gets a bit too much, refer back to your list and take a minute to stop and think about the little things that make you smile.
“There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle, or you can live as if everything is a miracle.”
Albert Einstein
