20 reasons why it’s great to be single

I’m an independent woman, I’ve tried the whole marriage thing and discovered it wasn’t for me. I don’t need a man to feel complete – I must admit though that it’s taken me years to feel that way. I’ve realized my own self-worth instead of depending on a man for it. Today I’m writing about the sunny side of singledom.

Your single years can be some of the most liberating times of your life.  Being single allows you to grow as a person, to have fun, be independent and take care of yourself – it’s not about feeling sad, lonely and empty.  Single life is great!

Yes, it’s great to share moments, secrets, laughs and worries with someone special but I have friends who I enjoy spending time with. Anyway, there are lots of people out there who are in relationships and they are sad and lonely.  I’m not, I’m single right now and it’s wonderful!

Here are 20 reasons why it’s great to be single:

  1. You can shamelessly fantasise about Tom Hardy.  moet-british-independent-film-awards-2013-red-carpet-arrival-1
  2. You’re not stuck with the wrong person, crying into your pillow at night, feeling miserable and trapped. You don’t have to compromise yourself for anyone else.
  3. You can have friends around for a movie night – chick flick time 🙂  IMG_20151107_211842
  4. You can travel anywhere in the world without worrying about how it will affect someone else. You have the freedom to go where you want and do what you want.
  5. You have more free time to rediscover or try new interests and hobbies. You can meet new people who share your interests and extend your social circle.
  6. You don’t have to share the bathroom. No more little hairs in the sink or endlessly putting the toilet seat back down. You can shower and sing badly for however long you like.  shower-1427304
  7. There is less housework! You only have to clear up your mess.  No more picking up socks and undies off the floor.  Less washing and ironing too.
  8. You don’t need to check in with anyone else, if you are late home from work or you bump into a friend unexpectedly and go for a coffee, well you have the freedom to do so.  2015-10-10 08.40.08
  9. You can wear your comfy underwear or if you don’t feel like shaving one day then don’t do it!
  10. You have the whole bed to yourself. No more playing tug of war with the duvet, no more snoring or being elbowed accidently whilst you are soundly sleeping. You can sprawl out – enjoy the bed space, become a starfish!  Picture2
  11. You can watch whatever you want on TV. No more fighting for the remote. Binge watching Orange is the New Black on Netflix? There will be no running commentary whilst you do so. Great, isn’t it?  remote-control-1539267
  12. You never have to pretend to care about a sport that doesn’t interest you.
  13. You can have as many handbags as you want – nobody’s counting! There’s plenty more space in the wardrobe.  IMG_20150915_215650
  14. You are free of the many stresses that plague relationships – the fighting, little jealousies, embarrassments, negative comments, judgements and accusations.
  15. You can listen to the same songs over and over without anyone telling you to stop.
  16. You never get home from work desperate for a snack only to find that it’s been eaten.
  17. You can eat what you want when you want. Enjoy leftover pizza for breakfast, crisp sandwiches for lunch and toast for dinner – who is going to judge you? Nobody!  pizza-1562028
  18. No one is comfortable enough with you that he farts or talks about his bowel habits.
  19. You can burn your favourite candles and nobody will moan about the scent.  2015-10-11 18.11.54-1
  20. When you’re single, you only have to put up with people you want in your life. You don’t have to endure a meal at the in-laws. How fab is that?

Embrace your single status!

Keep smiling 🙂

I can definitely agree with all of those, but I do have a great guy, who lets me have my friends round on a Friday, I get to watch what I want – we have two tv’s, he does clean up after himself – toilet episodes a good example, and he looks after me when I’m having a bad day.

  2. I love being married and wouldn’t have it any other way but don’t miss out on any of the above, still get to do everything 🙂 xxx

  3. I am married and don’t depend on my husband for my self worth. I know what I am worth with or without him. You shouldn’t rely on anyone for your self worth

  4. angie says:

many great reasons after being married for 30 years some of these sound awesome

  5. serenityyou says:

jealous now!! I have been married for almost 12 years and now I am wondering why LOL

  6. dominika says:

Even though married for 5 years already, I always say to my friends who have difficulties finding ‘the one’, that there are many advantages of being single.. and I am definitely right saying this! People don’t have to be in relationships/married to be totally happy.

    Great post

  7. This is a fun post! I remember being single back in the day and it was really fun, but I would miss my family…I think…maybe…yeah, I would.

  8. Cathy Glynn says:

Claire it sounds like bliss, I had it for 13 years and then got married again lol x

  9. What a fun look at advantages to the single lifestyle. I’ve been married 20 years and sometimes long for some things (e.g. no one giving you a sideways glance about wanting to watch a chick flick), but am glad to have my husband in my life.

  10. Angie@chasingmyhalo says:

Single years are some of the best years! I second the bathroom comment, but I have to say that if I want to skip shaving for a day married, I do!!

  11. This is a great perspective! Thanks for sharing with us all 🙂

  12. Great post Claire. Made me laugh out loud.

  13. Olfa Turki says:

I’ve been married for many years and I’m enjoying it. But, if I’m single, I’d definitely be enjoying all these.

  14. I am married with three boys. I really could go for not having to share my bathroom right now, lol.

  15. Ria Rosaura Romero says:

sometimes i get too overwhelmed of being a mother and wife and wish i’m alone but then when reality struck me i have no other choice but to enjoy life as it is. i guess it’s by choice to be single.

  16. Eileen xo says:

Fantastic post Claire i have been married 26 years, wow, longer than being single at this point! I love my hubs and our ridiculous amount of children :)but truly love the freedom you experience ! Enjoy and embrace as you do so well Love your spirit, i

As long as you are happy that is the main thing x

  18. laura447 says:

This is a great list for all the single ladies out there. I’m very lucky and have a brilliant partner (of 11 and a bit years) but the amount of extra housework I have to do because of things he hasn’t done gets me very annoyed!!! The house is pretty tidy but as soon as he comes home from work it gets untidy within about two seconds!!!

    Laura x

  19. Coupon Diva (@RealCouponDiva) says:

and here’s another great reason – one can sit around in their housedress all morning and drink tea 😀

  20. Elizabeth O. says:

These are definitely nice, why not. Although, it’s also great to have someone to share stuff with.

  21. R U S S says:

While I am in a relationship, I am still considered single ( since a lot of my friends are entering married life ). Reading your post confirms that I don’t think I am ready for that next level so yes, I like being single. #4 is the part that I agree most. Traveling is something that I have been doing the past years and still enjoying every moment of it. Most of my friends can’t just go anywhere so yeah, single works for me.

  22. sacha says:

I can see why I choose single over being married every time! Thanks <3

  23. Love your list on the benefits of being single, some I was nodding my head in agreement others I was saying but you get this.. thanks for sharing.

  24. I was married once, and sometimes I honestly swear I will never get married again. I get slight twinges of jealousy sometimes when I see happy couples…but honestly I feel like I lose myself in relationships. Right now I am super happy with my only relationships being those with my two children. Devoting all my time to them is what makes me happy!

  25. I love this post, some of the facts are so true. I think being single and being in a relationship both have pros and cons. I couldn’t live without my husband! xx

  26. I am happily married however there are times that I do miss the single life. I know if I wasn’t happy then I would much rather be single.

  27. this is a funny read. I am married 16 yrs and 3 kids could not imagine if I was single now

  28. veronica jackson says:

What a great list and I know what you mean.
I am single and sometimes would like someone to share my life with, but I see people in relationships, just to say they have a man. I do not need that and feel stronger for it.
I enjoy travel and have been to some fantastic places.
,I can please myself and do what I want there is no-one demanding tea on the table at a certain time.
Yes there is a lot to be said for the single life, well said Claire

  29. stephjenssen says:

As a single lady, I love this post 🙂 All of my friends are getting married, and sometimes it’s a real bummer to be the “single friend”. Love the bed note the most! I could never imagine not being able to starfish lol!

  30. Irene says:

Amazing post dear! You have a wonderful blog:)

  31. Tori Gabriel says:

What a great list. I never really appreciated these things when I was single. I’m happily married now and wouldn’t change it for the world but I do sometimes miss having sole control of the remote (Time Team back to back on Sundays?! WTF Hubby? Are you 80?)

  32. Such a liberating post for all those single people out there! Whilst I am happily married I can totally agree with some of these points lol! x

  33. Jenni - Odd Socks and Lollipops says:

I wish that I could have read this list before I got married, I am happy now, but I didn’t appreciate the single life and this is a great list!

  34. Yes, yes, yes x 20! I didn’t realise you were single – I am too. High Five! Kaz x

  35. Ana De-Jesus says:

I agree I am only 22 but my friends are getting married, having children or long term relationships and find it strange that I want to stay single. It feels liberating to be your own woman.

  36. mya.k says:

I’ll have to tell my friends about this, really good stuff.

  37. michelle says:

i haven’t had issues with not being able to do most of these things in relationships but if i did have to give up some of these things it better be for the right person

  38. Claire, I found your post quite comical :). I have never been married; however, after getting pregnant and the father leaving me at three months pregnant, it left me with a slightly bitter taste towards relationships. Like you, learning to be happy being single did not come immediately. After twelve years of being single I have had plenty of time to analyze life and for the first time I love myself. It is an amazing feeling to not have to find others to fulfill me because I am fulfilled on my own. Are there wonderful men out there? I am sure but until I find one, I have no intention on settling for anything less. My daughter tries to push me to date, but when I look around there are very few people that are truly happy with their relationships. I am more than happy (which is fleeting), I am content. Thank you for sharing this. I have definitely thought about quite a few of these benefits of being single. ~Jennifer

  39. jajabels21 says:

I definitely agree with this when I was still with my ex boyfriend. Honestly, i think you read my mind from this post. But then,I enjoyed my life from singlehood for just a year. Now I have my amazing man with me. Maybe all you need is to fully recover from the past. Enjoy being single girl!

  40. This is hilarious, I agree with these, but I’ve been married for two years.

  41. I’m not single but I love this! The kitty purse is great too

  42. Shann Eva says:

Good for you! Even though I’m married, I feel the same about my self worth. I didn’t get married until I was older, and knew myself pretty well.

  43. Chanelle says:

Lol, I love being married, but I enjoyed reading your post. 🙂

  44. I love being married but I would rather be alone than be with the wrong person

  45. Jojo Vito says:

hahaha what a great excuse to be single..well, I am single but I love to be with someone 🙂

  46. Esme Sy says:

These are great reasons to be single, though I love being married. My husband and I have been married for 28 years.

  47. Holly says:

This is a really fun list, and being single definitely has some perks. I have found, however, that if you find yourself in a relationship with someone who is also your best friend, that you can not shave and wear those comfy undies when you feel like it knowing that it won’t be held against you, and that’s pretty special.

  48. Kara says:

I have been married for 10 years and together for 16 and sometimes I crave a day / evening to myself

  49. lifeaslex92 says:

I am in a serious relationship and I adore my boyfriend. 🙂 I have actually been married before and it was a terrible experience for me. BUT! I know mine was with the wrong man! If you are happy and comfortable with single! That is awesome! If you happy married than that is awesome too. 🙂 These are great and funny. LifeAsLex

  50. delainemyles says:

Single life is good because of all the freedom but overtime you get tired if being single and I want to be in a relationship.

  51. workoutwithdi says:

hahahaha #6! Well we have two bathrooms. One each so doesn’t tend to be a problem. Single life is fun no doubt but I wouldn’t be without my honey! Having that soulmate to talk to, snuggle with, and is your best friend. That’s the key friendship! many people in relationship forget that the physical changes.

  52. this is funny & alot of these are true – I remember those days but it’s nice to have someone around too 😉

  53. I agree that singleness is an enjoyable season to do the things you really want to do! 🙂

  54. I have been single for a long time, and I am married now. I wish I’d have enjoyed my years more as there is so much I miss about them now. I love being married too. Both relationship status are completely OK

  55. Quamarul Islam Manna says:

Oh. I should be single 🙂 . Awesome reasons you wrote. Thumbs up.

  56. Great reason, especially number one, Tom Hardy. I have not been single since 1988 🙂 My kids are all still single, in relationships but not yet married.

  57. OhlalaLexie says:

Hahah love this!! And definitely love your point about being able to love on Tom Hardy shamelessly!

  58. Ha! I love the phrase the “sunny side of singledom” – it’s very catchy. And, I LOVE Orange is the New Black. You make some very good points here. As a non-single person, I would like to not HEAR about the state of my bathroom sink. I like having all my products decorating the sink, and that’s the way I like it. You have your own…why do you care what mine looks like?

  59. Lol I always skip shaving if I don’t feel like it and we’ve been married for almost 5 years–I was like that when we were dating, but he doesn’t seem to mind as long as I’m still paying attention to him haha

  60. QueenThrifty says:

Lol this is hilarious. I really enjoy my time with Jeff
